World population grew from 3 billion in 1960 to 7,5 billion today, while poverty and hunger problems were reduced, an incredible achievement. However, humanity needs all the resources available and a working system of “living together” in order to avoid conflict. And there is no turning back, because poverty, hunger and illness for great numbers would be the inevitable result. In this globalized world, great powers compete for control of scarce resources ever more openly, as demonstrated in the daily news.

Precisely at this time, Great Britain decides to leave the EU. Is a succesfull “go-it-alone” strategy with better outcomes in this global environment possible? To me, this is extermely difficult to imagine. If it wants to play even a minor role in competition with the new USA, China, Russia and India, Europe will have to stick together, even much better than before. It will be less succesfull without Britain, but how can Britain develop a better position on the world stage on its’ own?

Of course, globalization has also had a great number of negative side-effects, which have to be dealt with. But to address these issues on the international stage, close cooperation is a precondition. Going it alone will only weaken the British position, not only vis-a-vis the EU, but also on the world stage.

Many times, Britain played a crucial role in the development of Europe. What’s needed today from Britain is the leadership to play that kind of role again as part of the EU. The Brexit process is a waste of talent, time and money and painfull to watch. Britain, it’s time to come to your senses. Europe needs you, and you need Europe.
